This is such a weird song. Doug Newman, Roy Jardine and I (Doug Collins) were practising a few (7?) years ago and we took a break. Doug started telling us about this documentary that he just watched and my fingers started playing the riff while I was listening. I was transfixed, playing along to his story. At one point I started the chorus progression, again - I have no idea where it came from - I just played it. The next few days I was asking everybody if they'd heard the riff and chorus before. No one had, so I figured it was new. I went back to the rehearsal recording and transcribed everything that Doug had said. His story is the lyrics of this weird, weird, but epic song. When we were working on it last week my enthusiasm led me to start singing the ah, ah ahs at the end. My wife contributed her surprisingly powerful vocals and we had a choir. Ian Spencer supplies the storm with his wicked organ work and Roy rocks hard on the solo. Doug brings it all together with solid drum work, including thuds and broken glass, while I was energized to put out more vocal horsepower than I have in a while. I hope you enjoy Freak Wave.
