Yes — California has a new law banning plastic shopping bags starting January 1, 2026 as part of a statewide effort to cut plastic waste. Grocery stores, convenience stores, pharmacies, food marts, and similar retailers will no longer be allowed to provide plastic carryout bags at checkout, including both single‑use and thicker “reusable” plastic bags.
Instead, only recycled paper bags (which shoppers may be charged a minimum of about 10 ¢ each) or bring your own.
