You can use these methods to dye wool at any stage of processing. You can use raw wool or plain white wool yarn. Just make sure it is 100% wool or this won't work.
1 - Fill a large bowl with warm water and about 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Add wool and leave to soak for 30min. If using a ball of yarn you may want to unravel and re-wrap in large circles (like around your thumb and arm).
2 - Mix your dye colours. If using 1 colour, add enough water to you second bowl to cover the
wool and mix in food dye. If using multiple colours, mix each of the colours with about 100mL of water in measuring jugs or similar.
3- Once the wool has finished soaking, remove if from the bowl and squeeze the water out gently. Add the dye. Lay your plastic food wrap (big enough to wrap the wool). If using one colour, put all your wool in the large bowl with the chosen colour. Once every part of the wool is coloured remove and place on the plastic wrap. If using multiple colours, place the wool on the plastic wrap and pour the food dye over the sections you want each colour – you may have some colours running into each other.
4 - Wrap your wool in plastic so it looks a sausage and place it on one of the plates.
5 - Microwave the wool for 2 minutes. Remove from the microwave.
6 - Put the 2nd plate on top of the plate with wool then flip it over so the wool is upside-down on the 2nd plate. Microwave for another 2 minutes.
7 - Remove from microwave, left cool slightly before removing the wool from the plastic and then let cool completely. You can wash the wool in COLD water if you want.
