Though born in Ireland, Charles Wood became a reputable organist, composer, and teacher in England. Wood taught students at both Cambridge University and the Royal College of Music (including Vaughan Williams), and his diverse musical output ranged from chamber music to cantatas. Like his contemporaries, he also wrote a large number of choral part songs.
Wood’s setting of this text from Shakespeare’s The Tempest presents a paradox. During Act I, the sprite Ariel uses this song to convince a young man that his father has been killed at sea following a violent storm. Despite Shakespeare’s morbid choice of words (“of his bones are coral made”), Wood’s musical setting is deliberately cheerful, possibly using this juxtaposition for comedic effect.
