Here’s the eighth monthly installment of The Phonograph Project video series, our take on a set of jigs recorded in 1920 by Michael Coleman, ‘Kitty’s Rambles’ and ‘The Frost Is All Over’. It’s one of the first commercial recordings made by Coleman, and a brilliant set of tunes altogether, featuring excellent piano accompaniment from John Muller. Both jigs are commonly known today, but Coleman’s versions are a bit different from the more commonly heard settings.
The Phonograph Project is a running monthly video and tutorial series exploring Irish music recorded in America in the 1920s and 30s. Each month, we pick a 78 that was recorded exactly 100 years ago (or as close as we can get). We study the tunes and the style of the musician(s), record a video of us playing the tunes, and create a tutorial that teaches the tunes and captures the setting, style, and spirit of the music as we’ve interpreted it. We also record a second set of tunes every month that’s only available over on our Patreon page. In addition to all this, we release high-quality audio tracks of each of our sets for our subscribers, which means that we’re building a full-length album month by month.
The Phonograph Project is hosted over on Patreon. There’s a bunch of content over there, including early access to our monthly videos, monthly bonus videos for subscribers, historical notes, and full-blown tutorials on the tunes on fiddle, flute, and uilleann pipes. Additionally, subscribers get a free copy of our 2019 album, "The Glory Reel". The Phonograph Project has been running for eight months now, which means that we’ve released sixteen tracks and eight tutorials, all of which are available immediately upon signing up!
