徽州地區是史上中國經濟文化重地，安徽省名中的「徽」字就是由徽州而來。
古徽州是徽商的發祥地，明清時期徽商稱雄中國商界300多年，有「無徽不成鎮」、「徽商遍天下」之說。以徽商、徽劇、徽菜、徽雕和新安理學、新安醫學、新安畫派、徽派篆刻、徽派建築、徽派盆景等文化流派構成的徽學，更是博大精深。它與敦煌學、藏學有同樣影響。
徽州文化是江南省和1667年江南省分治後安徽省江南地區的古徽州一府六縣物質文明和精神文明的總和，而不等同安徽文化。
徽州文化是極具地方特色的區域文化，其內容廣博、深邃，有整體系列性等特點，深切透露了東方社會與文化之謎，全息包容了中國後期封建社會民間經濟、社會、生活與文化的基本內容，被譽為是後期中國封建社會的典型標本。學術界對其的研究，至少經歷了大半個世紀，80年代以後更趨火熱，逐漸形成了一門相對獨立的地方學--"徽學"，被譽為是並列與敦煌學和藏學的中國三大走向世界的地方顯學之一。

It has the same influence as Dunhuang studies and Tibetan studies.
Huizhou culture is the sum of the material and spiritual civilization of the ancient Huizhou prefecture and six counties in the Jiangnan area of ​​Anhui Province after the division of Jiangnan Province in 1667, and is not equivalent to Anhui culture.
Huizhou culture is a regional culture with local characteristics. Its content is extensive, profound, and has the characteristics of overall series. It deeply reveals the mystery of Eastern society and culture, and holistically encompasses the basic content of folk economy, society, life and culture in late feudal China. It is known as a typical specimen of late feudal China. The academic community has been studying it for at least half a century. After the 1980s, it became more and more popular, and gradually formed a relatively independent local study - "Hui studies", which is known as one of the three major local studies in China that are going global, along with Dunhuang studies and Tibetan studies.
