Jorge Choquehuillca - Cuculino

One day I found myself driving in a mini van with Jorge, a local musician from Cusco. His friend, himself also a musician, was driving. Our plan was to find some church in a remote place to record a few songs. We didn't really have a fixed plan, just a general direction, the plateau above the sacred valley. After some search and driving around this vast, breathtaking landscape, we found this abandoned church and we were allowed to go in and record. And Jorge played some beautiful traditional songs which I hope I will publish one day here. When he was about to finish, I asked him to play one more and improvise a bit. And he did, and it was this one take. When I looked back, I saw we have this super small audience, local friends who knew we came here to do this experiment. And it felt like time stood still for all of us. It was surreal.
After our private concert we went to the nearby cemetery where they both played songs for a family and a man who lost his wife recently. When I was making a video for the song, I didn't know what it was about, I just followed my intuition. And this is how it turned out. When I showed Jorge the video and asked him, what is the title of the song, he replied, Cuculino is the name of the song and it is a funeral song, especially for the babies, for the souls to go to the other side. He said, the video captures exactly what this song is about. And I want to share this song and the feelings of that day with you. I hope you like it.
