Buried secrets, double meanings and encrypted emotions from England's most turbulent century, vividly brought to life by "Australia's Baroque supergroup" (The Australian).
Things got rather Puritanical in England during the 17th Century. Heads rolled (notably, that of King Charles I), witches were burned, and bans placed on football, theatres, and the playing of music in public. But such laws were bound to be flouted, and music always finds a way.
CLOAK & DAGGER opens a portal into the hearts and minds of people in an age of political turmoil, religious upheaval and social revolt - all themes that continue to resonate today.
VDB Artistic Director JULIA FREDERSDORFF has curated this immaculately-researched program, which will be vividly brought to life by guest vocalists LOTTE BETTS-DEAN (23-27 Oct) and QUIN THOMSON (28 Oct) and some of Australia's most respected musicians , performing on gut strings and instruments of the past.
Here she gives a quick glimpse into her inspirations and motivations for delving into this fascinating period of history to create a program which traverses witches dances by John Dowland, hop-soaked protest songs from bawdy taverns, new settings of the propaganda-laden Broadside Ballads, and Henry Purcell’s beloved “Dido’s Lament” from Dido & Aeneas.
