More than half of Russian oil is produced in Khanty-Mansiysk district today.
Once it was inhabited by woolly rhinos, cave lions.
Now, there's only a monument to the mammoth.
Ugra – this used to be the Russian name for the lands beyond the Northern Urals.
Khanty-Mansiysk received its name in honor of the indigenous peoples of the region – Khanty and Mansi.
The city stands on Samarovsky Chugas– that is the Khanty name for a tall flood-free cape.
This used to be the fortress of Khanty ruler Samar.
Later the name Samarovo passed to the Russian village.
In the 20th century, it became part of Khanty-Mansiysk.
One of the symbols of the city is the bridge over Irtysh. For its color and shape, it was called the "Red Dragon".
Nearby is the site of Irtysh's confluence with Ob.
The confluence of the two great rivers is noted by the floating buoy-chapel.
Khanty-Mansiysk is one of the Russian capitals of skiing, biathlon and ... chess!
The 39th World Chess Olympiad was held here.
