Emperor commissioned a short opera from both Mozart and Salieri for a contest between German and Italian operas. Mozart submitted Der Schauspieldirektor (German) and Salieri submitted Prima la musica (Italian). They were performed at the same time in a private concert in Schönbrunn Palace in February 7th 1786, with Mozart's opera presented at at one end of the room and Salieri's at the other end with the guests at the center of the room. In the end, they preferred Salieri's work over Mozart.
