Operation Allied Force was NATO’s 78-day air campaign in 1999 to halt Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic’s ethnic cleansing of Kosovar Albanians. Triggered by failed peace talks and a massing of 40,000 Serbian troops, the operation began on March 24 with a multinational air assault led by the U.S. Air Force. The campaign unfolded in three escalating phases, ultimately striking targets across Serbia, including Belgrade. Over 38,000 sorties were flown—29% with precision munitions—and the operation marked the first combat use of B-2 bombers and widespread use of UAVs. Despite coordination challenges, weather, and tough air defenses, NATO’s air power forced Milosevic to withdraw, allowing Kosovo self-rule and the return of refugees.
