Neutral atoms are a very promising approach to the construction of quantum computers. Their neutral charge allows us to pack them densely in a two-dimensional array, with only a couple of microns separating each atom. This setup is massively scalable. We can entangle the atoms through a process known as Rydberg excitation, which affects a broad area of the array. This process yields a high level of connectivity.

Moreover, the high connectivity, in conjunction with the complex atomic states of the atoms we employ, lays a solid foundation for error correction and future fault tolerance in quantum computing systems.

Lastly, and importantly, this method is inherently capable of miniaturization. The cell that was previously mentioned is small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. The remainder of the quantum computer comprises lasers, optics, and electronics—all of which are amenable to miniaturization.
