Jianshui Purple Pottery, also known as Jade in Southern Yunnan, originated in the late Neolithic period. The clay used for pottery comes from the Wancai Mountain in the region, which has a high iron content. This results in high hardness and strength of the finished pottery, giving it a metallic texture and producing a clear sound when struck. The pottery is meticulously polished without glaze, creating a smooth and reflective surface like a mirror. It is renowned for being "as hard as iron, as clear as water, as lustrous as jade, and as resonant as a chime." Jianshui pottery emphasizes fine craftsmanship, with particular attention to decoration. It employs techniques such as carving, inlaying with colored clay, and filling with clay to combine the arts of calligraphy, painting, metalwork, engraving, and inlay.
