G'day!
Starting this new series of Ableton Live-focussed tutorials, I present an exciting variation on the very commonly used ping pong delay effect that psytrance so often features.
Delay echoes that repeat at a rate of every 3 sixteenth notes (dotted quavers in traditional rhythmic notation) or every 3 eighth notes (dotted crotchets in traditional rhythmic notation), are a staple of psytrance (and also common in dub-reggae music on snares and vocals btw).
Without these echoing rhythms so common in psytrance, there would be a lot of groove missing. Having said that, sometimes I feel that when I and other producers use the technique, especially with a ping pong delay, where each repeat/echo alternates from the right to left to right speakers, it feels/sounds a bit lazy/cliché.
So I was excited to share this interesting and psychedelic variation on the ping-pong delay which uses Ableton's pitch-shifting device called "Shifter".
IMPORTANT: This effect requires the sound source to have sustained notes to work properly. (Long reverb tails for example)
Let me know if you happen to have Bitwig and would like me to show you a way to build similar unusual ping-pong delays using bitwig devices and modules! (I certainly am excited to do so).
