American Kestrels in Falconry: Good Idea for Beginners? Good Idea for You? Find out!
Are you looking to get into falconry and think maybe you want to start with a kestrel? Michele, IRFC's director and master falconer, explains why this may not be a good choice. Or are you already a falconer and thinking about flying a kestrel? Or are you just curious to hear what Michele has to say about the subject? This video goes over the pros and cons as well as discussing "car hawking" in which will be sure to be polarizing in the Microfalconry and falconry community.
Polarizing or not, agree or not, it is a conversation that new falconers and would-be sponsors (in USA) need to have with themselves. When choosing to be a falconer, choosing the species of raptor you want to fly for falconry, and choosing where/how you hunt with your bird, it isn’t just about you and what you want. These birds are living souls with intrinsic rights and their wellbeing must be considered...it is THEIR lives on the line, NOT the falconer's. Be a good human, lay down your ego and make the honorable choice.
