Sawadee khap my farangutan friends and puan puan khun Thai! If you follow my channel, you may have seen the video where I drank a pint of Guinness in a bar in Pathum Thani. It wasn't great. However, it did make me contemplate if it is possible to get a decent pint of Guinness in Bangkok.
I asked ChatGPT where I could find the best Guinness pours in Thailand. It suggested 4 Irish boozers (surprise, surprise) after scouring the reviews on the internet. The pubs were:
Paddy O'Reilly's Irish Pub - Soi Sathorn 12
Scruffy Murphy's - Sukhumvit Soi 23
O'Leary's Irish Pub - Sukhumvit Soi 15
Fitzgerald's - Sukhumvit Soi 4
Unfortunately, I was not going in Fitzgerald's. As a disclaimer of sorts Fitzgerald's is a great pub. I have been going in there for nearly 20 years under its various incarnations. It changes its name more than I do my underwear. Anyhow, I had a disagreement with a waitress in there and said I was not going to come back. The full story is in the video. I won't dwell on it here. Don't let that put you off the pub. The staff are generally friendly, the foods good, they have lots of beers and spirits on etc. My review from my last visit would be an average 5/10 on the Guinness, so the review of the liquid black stuff is documented.
What makes a decent pint of Guinness? There are a number of factors. Again, I go into detail in the video. Am I an expert? Not really, but I have drunk Guinness in Ireland on several occasions, and I have drunk it at the brewery in Dublin. I can say that I know what it should look like and taste like after having the genuine article.
After a very expensive afternoon I came to the conclusion that drinking Guinness in Bangkok is simply not worth it. Why? You're paying top prices for a pint that can never live up to the original look and taste. You are not getting the best value for money in my opinion. The best pints are average compared to Irish Guinness in Ireland. When in Rome...get on the local beers if you can stomach them. Personally, I am not a fan of Leo, Singha....I can drink Chang at a push. I am a fan of Carabao but good luck finding that in bottles in town and definitely if you find it on draught! If you want cheap(ish) and almost local, perhaps a Tiger or Beer Lao will suit your palate?
