Mount Abu – Short History
Mount Abu, often called the “Oasis in the Desert,” is the only hill station in Rajasthan, India. Situated in the Aravalli Range, it has been a place of spiritual and cultural importance for centuries.
According to legend, the name “Abu” comes from Arbuda, a serpent who once saved the life of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull. Since then, it became a sacred land. Mount Abu has been a center for both Hinduism and Jainism – the world-famous Dilwara Temples, built between the 11th and 13th centuries, are masterpieces of marble carving and Jain devotion.
During ancient times, it was also a place of meditation for saints and sages, including Vashistha Muni, who is said to have performed a great Yagna here, giving rise to the mighty Rajput clans.
Later, in the British era, Mount Abu became a summer retreat for colonial officers due to its cool climate and scenic beauty. Today, it remains a blend of history, spirituality, and natural beauty, attracting pilgrims, nature lovers, and tourists from across the world.
