"Pretty Saro"
When I'd first come to this country in 1849,
I saw many fair lovers, but I never saw mine.
I looked all around me, saw that I was quite alone,
Me being a poor stranger and a long way from home.
It is not for the long journey that I'm dreading to go,
Nor for leaving my country for the debts that I owe.
There is just one thing that troubles my mind,
It's leaving Pretty Saro, my darling, behind.
Fair thee well to my dear mother, fair thee well to my father too,
I am going for to ramble this wide world all through.
When I get weary I'll sit down and cry,
And think of pretty Saro, my darling, my bride.
I wish I was a turtledove, had wings and could fly.
I would sail to my lover's lodgings, tonight I'd draw nigh.
There in her little arms all night I would lay,
And dream with pretty Saro till the dawning of day.
I love you pretty Saro, I love you I know.
I love you pretty Saro, wherever I go.
From the banks of the ocean to the mountain's sad brow,
I loved you then dearly, and I love you still now.

This is an old ballad that goes back to England probably in the 18th century. I learned it years ago from Jerron Paxton.
