1971 Penticton Peach Festival parade and fun on the water of Osoyoos Lake, Penticton, BC

The Penticton Peach Festival started in 1947. After the second world war, many towns and cities in BC's interior began these wonderful summer festivals. There was much pent-up desire to celebrate again after so many years deprived, due to war and the great depression.

The opening of the Hope-Princeton highway in 1949 allowed tourists from Vancouver easy access. The opening of the floating bridge in Kelowna in 1958 and completion of the TCH through Rogers Pass in 1962 increased tourism and visitors dramatically benefiting Penticton. The Peach Festival grew and became a popular summer experience. Floats and marching bands came from all over western Canadian and NW USA. Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Spokane were regular contributors

The colourful parade was one of the highlights of the festival. For the first time, Peachfest included an airshow featuring Tutor jet trainers flying in formation, the newly formed Snowbirds.
