The MIT Mini Cheetah LS is a small, agile four-legged research robot (a variant of MIT’s Mini Cheetah) designed for dynamic maneuvers. In this project, we discovered that a CNC actuator gear had developed a cracked tooth. Repeated cyclic loading can lead to bending fatigue cracks in gear teeth, and insufficient design margins or long-term wear may eventually result in severe wear or tooth failure. To address this issue, the gear was redesigned in CAD and fabricated using PCBWay’s CNC machining service. PCBWay offers high-precision CNC machining with tolerances as tight as ±0.01 mm, making it well-suited for robotics prototyping and custom mechanical parts. This video provides a technical walkthrough covering mechanical troubleshooting, CAD-based redesign, and precision manufacturing—relevant for robotics engineers, researchers, and advanced hobbyists.
