Every year, more than 20 million people from across the world walk nearly 80 kilometers from Najaf to Karbala in Iraq. This journey, known as the Arbaeen Walk, is the largest peaceful gathering on Earth — yet remains underreported in mainstream global media.

Arbaeen marks the 40th day after Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In 680 AD, Imam Hussain stood against tyranny and injustice, sacrificing his life for the principles of truth, justice, and humanity. His legacy continues to inspire millions across faiths and borders.

In this exclusive Free Press Journal ground report from Iraq, we take you inside the heart of the Arbaeen walk — from the spiritual starting point at the Shrine of Imam Ali in Najaf, through the desert roads, to the emotional arrival at the Shrine of Imam Hussain in Karbala.

Along the route, thousands of volunteers, known as maukibs, provide free food, water, medical care, resting places, and even massages to pilgrims — all as an act of love and service. Pilgrims from India, Africa, Europe, and the Americas walk side by side, united by the values Imam Hussain stood for.
