China Claims Shaksgam Valley as Its Territory, India Calls It Illegal Occupation

China has once again triggered a major geopolitical controversy by claiming Shaksgam Valley as its own territory and justifying the construction of roads and infrastructure linking the region toward Pakistan. The area lies in the strategically sensitive region of Jammu and Kashmir, which India has consistently maintained as an integral part of its sovereign territory.

Beijing’s latest statement has firmly rejected India’s objections, asserting that all construction activities in Shaksgam Valley are “fully justified” because the region allegedly falls under Chinese jurisdiction. This claim is rooted in the controversial 1963 China–Pakistan boundary agreement, an accord that India has never recognized, calling it illegal and invalid since Pakistan had no legal authority to cede Indian territory.

India has responded strongly, reiterating that Shaksgam Valley is part of Indian territory under illegal occupation and that any third-party agreement involving the region holds no legitimacy. The Indian government has also raised concerns over the strategic implications of Chinese infrastructure development in the area, especially its proximity to Ladakh, the Siachen Glacier, and critical mountain passes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The dispute gains further importance due to its connection with the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative. India has repeatedly objected to CPEC projects passing through Pakistan-occupied territories, arguing that such activities violate its sovereignty and threaten regional stability.

Experts warn that China’s renewed assertion over Shaksgam Valley could escalate India–China tensions, already strained after past military standoffs in eastern Ladakh.
