Night of Krampus by River Pine Kindred
Lyrics
On the fifth of cold December,
When the winds of winter bite,
A shadow stirs upon the roads
Beneath the dying light.
Through swirling snow and shuttered streets,
A horned shape slowly climbs
The wicked spirit Krampus comes,
Old scourge of ancient times.
Chorus:
Run, child, run feel the chill in the air;
Krampus walks where the wicked despair.
Birch rods rattle, and cold bells ring
On Krampus Night, the guilty sing.
His coat is black as forest pitch,
His claws like iron blades,
His serpent-tongue, long, coiling red,
Cuts shadows through the glades.
He hunts the ones who disobeyed,
Who mocked the holy day,
And all who scorned Saint Nicholas’ gifts
Must learn the winter’s way.
Chorus:
Run, child, run feel the chill in the air;
Krampus walks where the wicked despair.
Birch rods rattle, and cold bells ring
On Krampus Night, the guilty sing.
With birch rods bound in icy twine,
He lashes through the gloom,
And those who shriek in frightened cries
Are carried to their doom.
For in his sack of woven dread,
The naughty children go
To be dragged into the underworld
Beneath the mountain snow.
Bridge:
Yet good ones rest in peaceful dreams,
For Nicholas walks beside,
Rewarding hearts both pure and kind
Where gentle spirits hide.
Final Chorus:
Run, child, run hear the hoof on the stone;
Krampus claims those who wander alone.
Sleigh bells shimmer while cold winds sting
On Krampus Night, the shadows sing.
And when the dawn breaks pale and thin,
His fury slips from sight
Till December’s moon calls him again
To walk the winter night.
