Originating in the Bahmani capital of Bidar in the 15th century, it is steeped in history. Catch the story behind this art in this film.
Bidri art is a metal handicraft from the city of Bidar in Karnataka, India. It is a form of silver inlay on a black metal alloy, usually made of zinc, copper, lead, tin and iron. Bidri art was developed in the 14th century C.E. during the rule of the Bahmani Sultans, who were influenced by Persian art and culture.
Bidri art is known for its striking contrast between the shiny silver and the dark background. The silver is inlaid into the metal by chiseling the design and then hammering thin wires or sheets of silver into the grooves. The metal is then polished and buffed to make the silver shine. The final step is to oxidize the metal by applying a paste of soil and ammonium chloride, which turns the metal black except for the silver parts
Bidri art is mainly used to make decorative items such as vases, boxes, trays, bowls, hookahs, jewelry and more. The designs are often inspired by geometric patterns, floral motifs, calligraphy and scenes from nature. Bidri art is considered a symbol of wealth and heritage in India and has been awarded the Geographical Indications (GI) status in 2006.
