Migration is a universal process and experience embracing the complex physical, psychological and conceptual movement of both people and ideas towards new enhanced destinations. In the process, confrontations to former lifestyles and orthodox modes of expression naturally arise. Integrating the parallels of a percussion concert with the nuances of a human migration was informed by my own journey from Europe to Australia in 1950. The new idea explored in the concert is the various manners of eliciting long sounds on percussion instruments. Unaccompanied solo was the concert form chosen to represent this theme because migration is essentially an internal relocation for every person. This is the case in both a move to a new physical destination and a shift in conceptual thinking. Each requires acceptance of new and quite different approaches, accompanied by a shedding of the comfort of tradition.
