What are tension chords ?
The basic jazz chords go up to the 7th, ie maj 7, 7, m7, m7b5, dim.
A tension chord includes the notes above the octave, namely 9th, 11th and 13th.
The following tension chords for guitar are covered in this video :

Major chord : maj9, maj13, 6/9, 6
Dominant chords : 9, 11, 13, 9sus4
Minor chords : m9, m11, m6, m13

Since the half-diminished and diminished chords already need all available strings, we cannot have extension guitar chords for them.

The chords in this video are jazz guitar chords for beginners as well as for advanced players, who haven't been much into jazz.

Tension chords for jazz guitar are an absolute must for the inquiring jazz guitarist. They add colorful tones to your playing!

Since this is a jazz guitar comping lesson, we'll go no higher than the b-string. So when you comp the melody of any jazz standard, you will use these jazz guitar chords.
