Flynn Artistic Director Steve MacQueen sits down with Orly Yadin, executive director of the Vermont International Film Festival (VTIFF).
Orly Yadin has been executive director of VTIFF since January 2012. She is a filmmaker and producer of both documentaries and animation films and series. Prior to making films she was a film researcher on historical programs and since 2001, has been managing director of Footage Farm—an archival footage collection. Orly has also taught documentary film history and theory in universities in England and at Burlington College. In 1995, she co-founded and ran Halo Productions, specializing in animation films. Many of Halo’s short films won international awards at festivals, and one, Silence, was short-listed for the Academy Awards.
The Vermont International Film Festival began in 1985 at Marlboro College and has moved to Burlington with showcases in other parts of Vermont. It was born of the anti-nuclear movement in 1985, making it the world's oldest environmental and human rights film festival. Today the mission of VTIFF continues to enrich the community and bring the world to Vermont through film; its focus has broadened to embrace a wide spectrum of social issues and a focus on independent art-house cinema. Past festival guests have included such activist artists as actor Danny Glover, Bread & Puppet Theater founder Peter Schumann, and historian and playwright Howard Zinn, among others.
