The Shafer Trail is an amazing drive and a great way to really experience the solitude of Canyonlands National Park. Most of the year it's safe for most SUVs. It takes just a few hours but you'll never forget it. It's great for first time off road drivers but talk to a Ranger at the visitor center to be sure it's safe.
Moab is one of my favorite destinations. It's a great place for those who love the outdoors and beautiful landscapes. The Shafer Trail from is a great drive through the backcountry. It drops 1900 feet from Canyonlands Island in the Sky to the Colorado River on its way back to Moab.
It's tricky is places with 1000 foot drop offs, but when it's dry most vehicles can drive it safely. I've driven it 5 times in 3 different SUVs. Video from all 5 drives is included.
