We take on Cumberland Pass, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and the RimRocker Trail in this Colorado backcountry adventure. From snowy mountain passes and abandoned mines to Colorado’s tallest cliff and rugged trails into Utah, this journey is full of epic scenery, history, and remote camping.
Part 2 of our Colorado backcountry adventure picks up where we left off in Tincup. We climb high over Cumberland Pass, cutting through snow-covered switchbacks and rolling past the remains of old mining claims. From there, we continue into Pitkin and beyond, where the ghosts of Colorado’s mining past linger in the mountains.
Next, we head to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, home to the dramatic Painted Wall, the tallest sheer cliff in Colorado at over 2,200 feet. Standing at the rim of this narrow, vertical gorge is a reminder of just how wild and unforgiving these landscapes can be.
Finally, we take on the RimRocker Trail, running 160 miles from Montrose, Colorado to Moab, Utah. The route winds past plateaus, alpine forests, shelf roads, desert vistas, and red rock country before leading us to a beautiful camp at Buckeye Reservoir, tucked behind the La Sal Mountains. Along the way, Jamie whips up some new gourmet recipes that prove backcountry meals can be just as adventurous as the trails themselves.
