Cherokee Bill, originally named Crawford Goldsby, was born on February 8, 1876, in Fort Concho, Texas. His mother, Ellen Beck Goldsby Lynch, had a diverse heritage, including Cherokee, African American, and white ancestry. She was a Cherokee Nation citizen, born in the Delaware District, and her name appears on the Dawes Rolls. Her Cherokee roots came from her paternal lineage.
