Portland / Old Town Chinatown
Sometime in 2008, a 13 year younger Jack was off to an adventure to the Pacific Northwest and actually had dinner in Portland's Chinatown. As a much more enthusiastic Chinatown enthusiast, he makes his way back to see what Portland's Chinatown is like nowadays!
After arriving to San Francisco during the California Gold Rush, the Chinese were also attracted to the opportunities in the Pacific Northwest, as there were also gold mines in Oregon, and a demand in general labor. Portland's Chinatown used to be thriving with local businesses, as well as underground tunnels that provided illegal services as well.
Today, Portland's Chinatown still has local markets and restaurants operating, along with a few attractions such as the Lan Su Chinese Garden, but it's slowly becoming a homeless haven.
*Upon further research, Portland also used to have a Japantown in the same area.
