This crime drama was a forerunner of "Law & Order", in that a typical episode would be set up with the first half covering the police investigation and arrest of a criminal party, followed by the second half covering the trial of said party. The major difference between this series and "Law & Order" is that "Arrest and Trial" followed the side of the defense, as opposed to L&O's focus on the prosecution.
The series ran for 30 ninety-minute episodes during the 1963-64 season on ABC. Ben Gazzara starred as LAPD Sergeant Nick Anderson who, along with Sergeant Dan Kirby (Roger Perry), would track and arrest the criminal(s). The following trial of the criminal focused on the defense, led by attorney John Egan (Chuck Connors, fresh from his "Rifleman" days).
In "Journey into Darkness", dock worker and wannabe author Paul (Roddy McDowall) kills a man who had repossessed his typewriter. After trying to befriend Sergeant Anderson to throw off suspicion, Paul is arrested. While on trial, the facts of the case may be in favor of Paul's acquittal, if only he can keep his mouth shut...
