Charge what you’re worth (the two paths for tradesmen)

In this video, I discuss how skilled tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, tile installers, hvac, etc) can charge what they’re worth by choosing to focus on one of two avenues:
Option #1: High volume / low margin. These customers aren’t going to pay the highest rates, but they will give you a ton of work. Think General Contractors, remodelers, property managers, etc. Your gross profit margins will be lower but you can offset this by having a simpler business (less overhead, no marketing budget, used vehicles, etc)
Option #2: Low volume / high margin. These are direct customers like businesses and (in my line of work) home owners. These clients will pay more per unit of time but take more work to get — you have to properly brand and market your company to attract them, and they generally take more work to keep happy.
I think it’s a great idea for tradesmen and trades companies to pick one option to focus on and to dip their toes into the other path when necessity demands it.
