Father & Daughter Tackle 10,000+ Trail Peak for SOTA Activation

This was the first peak of the trip after setting up camp in the Horseshoe Meadow Campground via the Whitney Portal near Mount Whitney. This part of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range offers much solitude and opportunity to get lost. Once on the summit, Ashlee and I were rewarded with stunning views in every direction and could see thunderstorms brewing to our east causing us to setup the tarp and hustle for our contacts. The view to the west revealed a massive forest fire burning deep in the Golden Trout Wilderness area of the Sierras. A place as remote as this is exactly what ham radio was meant for because there was no cell service to be had. We did pick up the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) for a portion of the hike and then had to go off trail to the summit itself. Looking forward to doing this one again with Ashlee or Hailee and of course Tahyo someday soon. APRS worked well on the summit so we were able to send messages home to my wife KG6KDZ directly to her cell phone from my Yaesu VX8-DR..
