The Shinkoku Maru, a 10,000-ton Japanese fleet oiler built in 1939 and requisitioned for naval service in 1941, played a key role in refueling the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Pearl Harbor attack. Anchored in Chuuk Lagoon (formerly Truk) as a major Imperial base, it was targeted during the U.S. Navy's Operation Hailstone on February 17-18, 1944—a devastating aerial assault that crippled Japanese forces in the Pacific. Surviving initial torpedo runs from Grumman TBF Avengers, the ship succumbed to a near-miss bomb from USS Enterprise aircraft that breached its hull near the engine room, causing it to sink upright in 38 meters of water and claiming 25 lives. Today, the well-preserved wreck stands as one of Chuuk's premier dive sites, teeming with marine life and wartime artifacts like aircraft parts and ammunition.
