As of late October 2025, Japan’s Patent Office (JPO) issued a formal notification of reasons for refusal concerning Nintendo’s Japanese Patent Application No. 2024-031879, a filing related to the patents the company is asserting in its ongoing lawsuit against Pocketpair, the creator of Palworld.
The office determined that these prior works already disclosed similar gameplay mechanics and design elements, undermining the novelty of Nintendo’s claimed inventions. This decision is not final; Nintendo still has the right to amend or appeal. However, the finding could weaken its litigation stance, as the rejected application shares key similarities with patents central to the lawsuit.
