Since 1969, Simon J. de Waard is the owner of the luxe motor Stella Maris. In the engine room stands a one cylinder Industrie 1 IB 6 hot bulb engine of 35 hp from 1929. ‘It’s a hot bulb engine with water injection,’ De Waard tells. ‘When it’s well-heated, I can turn open the water injection and then it gives according to the manual about 10 percent more power. Only you have to be able to stand it, because the ship will shake more.’ In 2018, there was a fire aboard. De Waard is still working on the restoration, but the engine was unharmed. He demonstrates the pre-heating procedure and the changing of the rotation direction of the flywheel, after which he takes us sailing on the Merwede Channel.
