An earthquake in Haiti in January 2010 destroyed many homes, livelihoods and schools. In the wake of this, we carried out a pro-bono project to design a brand new secondary school for 150 pupils with further phases bringing that number up to 600. The structural design is suitable for local materials and basic building skills; developing a robust, safe, yet flexible building system that is resilient to seismic loading.
The project won the IStructE Award Sustainability 2019 and was shortlisted for the Construction News Awards International Project of the Year 2019 and IStructE Award Structure in Extreme Conditions 2019.
Former Eckersley O’Callaghan Project Director Gregor Horstmeyer and Architect for the project Studio PHH Architects Founding Director Pierre-Henri Hoppenot will join us to take us through the practical sustainable engineering and ethos behind this award winning project.
