Kevin: Today, on our 2015 Dodge Durango, we're gonna show you how to install the Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs. These are for the rear; designed to fit right into the coil springs. Part number is AL60824.Now the problem we hope to solve with the air bags is the vehicle squat that we get when we've got either a full load of people in the vehicle, the rear end kinda sags; maybe we're haulin' a trailer. You'll see as we bring the weight down on, the rear of the vehicle is gonna come down causing that squat. Now with about 200 pounds of tongue weight there on the back of the vehicle, we've actually had about an inch of squat here in the rear. So, this distance has been reduced quite a bit.

What that does is it causes the top edge of the tire to tip in a little bit. That's gonna give us uneven wear patterns on the inside edge of the tires, which can get expensive. Also, with that excess strain that we're putting on the rear suspension, it's required to a lot more work. So, with the air bags in there, giving us that additional support, we hope to eliminate the sag that we have here. It's gonna return our tire to the right position; and also take some of that stress off the rear suspension.Another problem we can correct with air bags is bringing the front end of the vehicle back down.

When you add weight to the rear, the front wants to come up. This has gone up about three eighths of an inch. That changes the suspension geometry here in the front. It takes some of the weight off the tire; so our steering, our braking, and our handling is just not gonna be the same. Also, the headlights tip up a little bit more, so that changes where they're pointed; it's gonna change our field of view.

So, again, just like the rear, we should be able to get this back to where we started at our factory ride height; so that we can keep all of our suspension geometries the same, and get the weight back down on those front tires so we can haul safely.Now with the exact same load on the back of our Durango, you can see what a difference those air bags really make. Before we had about an inch of sag, now our measurement's within about an eighth of an inch of where we started. This is taking all that excess pressure off the rear suspension. We're regaining our suspension travel, which will give us a smoother ride while towing. Now, on the front, we've come right back down to where we started.

This is gonna get that suspension geometry back to where it was when it left the factory. It means we're gonna get our even tire wear back. We've got the weight pushing back down on the front tires; that helps us out with our braking and handling. Now, not only are our handling characteristics gonna be much more similar to factory when we're hauling this load; but since that vehicle's leveled out, our headlight angle is gonna be the same as it was from the factory. That's gonna allow us to see much better in front of us. All of these things put together are gonna allow us to haul our trailer much more safely.Now let's take a look at our air bags installed. We're gonna look at the driver's side here, and you'll see how it's going to make that correction. Our air bag, as we said, is gonna fit right inside the coil spring. And with it inflated, as you see it now, that's gonna give us additional support. This would be right at our factory ride height; so as we start to load this and our spring wants to compress, our air bag is going to fight that. It has contact here at the upper spring mount, and at the lower spring mount; so the pressure in that bag gives us the additional support. Now, the bags are a durable polyurethane material. And they're gonna give us about 500 pounds of additional support per side, to help us level out our vehicle. Now one thing to keep in mind, our air bags aren't designed to increase our vehicle's safe load handling capability. These are designed to level out our vehicle, so we can haul whatever our vehicle's rated at, much more safely.Now you can see with the before and after side by side here, as we go through the slalom course, we're getting a lot less side to side body roll of our vehicle. As you can see here on our bumps course, it's a much smoother feel. The suspension isn't jumping up and down quite as much as it was before the air bags we're installed. All of this is helping to take that strain off of our rear suspension;
