Elon Musk has been obsessed lately with the idea of landing on the Moon using Starship, not just for exploration, but to eventually build a fully AI-operated satellite factory that can tap into the Moon’s untouched supply of solar power. And Musk isn’t just dreaming about it. He’s actively pushing Starship forward, rolling out a major upgrade with Version 3 that transforms the ship into a far more capable lunar lander, bringing his Moon vision closer than ever.

Elon Musk once explained why he became the richest person in the world. On X, he said, “A reminder that rapid evolution of technology is the only way to win. Those who don’t innovate rapidly are doomed to fail.”
And he’s right, it’s all about upgrading, innovating, and pushing forward every single minute, every single second, without ever slowing down.
Take Tesla for example. In terms of hardware, it’s not dramatically different from many other electric cars. But Musk pushed it to a completely different level, turning it into a smart, AI-driven vehicle that’s now racing toward full 100% self-driving. That vision alone has put Tesla far ahead of most competitors.

And the same mindset applies to rockets. Even though SpaceX already has Falcon 9, the most reliable and successful medium-lift rocket on Earth, they still pushed forward and built Starship, aiming for something far more powerful, more efficient, and dramatically cheaper.
In fact, affordability has always been the real game-changer. Back in the Apollo era, from 1961 to 1972, a single seat to space cost about 390 million dollars.
Today, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, far more modern and far more comfortable, brings that price down to roughly 55 million dollars per seat. And the interesting part is: even with such a massive price drop, it still turns a profit.
Musk understands this core principle better than anyone. That’s why he recently shared an even more ambitious dream in a rather cryptic post. Instead of running AI on Earth, he suggested placing AI computers on satellites in sun-synchronous orbit, where solar power is abundant and completely free. If you launched a million of these satellites, each generating around 100 kilowatts of power, you’d have about 100 gigawatts of AI computing capacity in total, roughly one-fifth of California’s entire electricity consumption.
