Carolan’s Farewell
The remarkable life of this 17th century Irish harper/composer came to an end back at the home of his original patron Mrs. McDermot Roe. After a lifetime of traveling and composing beautiful melodies for his many patrons and friends from both sides of the fractious society of his time (thereby becoming something of a peacemaker as well), he knocked on the door of the woman who gave him his first harp, and said “I have come home to die.” Thereupon he took up his harp, and left to the world his last most precious gift, “Farewell to Music”.
