This performance is based on the famous dapu by Ding Chengyun. While I played directly off the original jianzipu score from Xilutang Qintong 西麓堂琴統 (1525), the rhythm of Prof. Ding’s playing is impossible to forget after I heard it many years ago. Although the piece is attributed to the legendary sage king Yao, my interpretation of the piece is that it is the music characterizing the ecstasy of Shaman’s ritual dance. The ancient sage kings who made sacrifices to Heaven and Earth and invitations of Gods to witness are Shamanistic after all.
