Clair de Lune from Suite Bergamasque L.75 No. 3
Claude Debussy (1862-1918)
Kamil Fattouh (piano) - LNHCM, Liza Tutunjian
Composed around 1890 and published in 1905 as part of the Suite bergamasque, Clair de Lune reflects Debussy’s early engagement with Symbolist aesthetics and French Baroque dance forms. The piece is written in D-flat major and structured in ternary form, with a flowing opening section, a more animated middle in modulation, and a calm return. Debussy’s harmonic language relies on modal inflection, unresolved dissonance, and parallel motion, all contributing to a sense of fluidity rather than tonal closure.
