When Saint Francis of Assisi Heard Christ Speak from the Crucifix — "Rebuild My Church"

The crucifix itself still exists today and is venerated as the San Damiano Crucifix.

Francis was shaken by what he heard. He sold his possessions, repaired churches stone by stone, and embraced radical poverty — only later realizing that Christ was calling him to rebuild not walls, but souls. From that moment, his life became total obedience to the voice he had heard. What began as a single command in a silent chapel became a movement of evangelical poverty, humility, and conversion that spread across the world.

This vision was not given for spectacle, but for mission. Christ did not ask Francis to argue, to condemn, or to dominate — but to rebuild through holiness, humility, and love. The Church would later recognize Francis as one of its greatest saints, canonizing him in 1228 and confirming that the voice he heard was not illusion, but divine calling.
