This answers does cold water or hot water boil faster and why might many people think cold water boils faster than hot water. I do some rigorous science experiments to find the answers and explain the different rates of heat transfer when there's a big temperature difference versus when there's a small temperature difference. At the same time, I also show how to use a thermistor inside an automobile coolant temperature sensor instead of a cooking thermometer for these experiments.
Addendum: It's been pointed out that as temperatures reach boiling the reason for the slow down in temperature change is most likely because more energy is going into evaporation instead of increasing temperature.
