Shalmala River is a river originating in Dharwad . It joins the Arabian Sea . The source of Shalmala River is Someshwara Temple in Dharwad. It is about 5 km from the center of the town towards Kalaghatagi Road. Although there is water at the source of Shalmala today, it is a hidden river in Dharwad. Now it flows only in Uttara Kannada district.
The riverbed, which used to be full and flowing, can be seen here and there around Dharwad. The poet built a student hostel next to the now dry riverbed, naming it Shalmala Student Hostel.
The tributary, Bedti, originates in Hubli taluk and joins the Shalmala river near Kalaghatagi. From there, it flows 25 km eastwards and enters Uttara Kannada district with the name Shalmala.

The Shalmala River also has tributaries called the Town Stream and the White Stream.

Shalmala River Valley Conservation Area
It is a habitat for the rare bird "Malabar Pied Hornbill". The Ceylon Frogmouth, Maradarisina, Ashoka, Uppage and Vayuvilanga are the special plant species here. A 100 m area on both sides of the 15.76 km long river from Sahasralinga to Ganeshpal has been declared as the "Shalmala River Riparian Ecosystem Conservation Reserve".
ಶಾಲ್ಮಲಾ ನದಿ ಧಾರವಾಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವ ಒಂದು ನದಿ. ಅರಬ್ಬೀ ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಶಾಲ್ಮಲಾ ನದಿಯ ಉಗಮ ಸ್ಥಾನ ಧಾರವಾಡದ ಸೋಮೇಶ್ವರ ಗುಡಿ. ಇದು ಊರಿನ ಮಧ್ಯಭಾಗದಿಂದ ಕಲಘಟಗಿ ರಸ್ತೆಯ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು ೫ ಕಿಮೀ ದೂರ ಸಾಗಿದರೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂದು ಶಾಲ್ಮಲಾ ಉಗಮ ಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರಿದ್ದರೂ, ಧಾರವಾಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಪ್ತಗಾಮಿನಿ. ಈಗ ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಹರಿವಿದೆ.
ಧಾರವಾಡದ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲೂ ಹಿಂದೆ ತುಂಬಿಕೊಂಡು ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ನದಿಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಡಬಹುದು. ಇಂದು ಬರಡಾದ ನದಿಪಾತ್ರದ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿವಿ ಒಂದು ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ನಿಲಯವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ, ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಶಾಲ್ಮಲಾ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ನಿಲಯ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಸಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಉಪನದಿಯಾದ ಬೇಡ್ತಿ, ಹುಬ್ಬಳಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿ, ಕಲಘಟಗಿ ಬಳಿ ಶಾಲ್ಮಲಾ ನದಿಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಗಮಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಪೂರ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ೨೫ ಕಿಮೀ ಹರಿದು ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯನ್ನು ಶಾಲ್ಮಲಾ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಮಲಬಾರ್ ಪೈಡ್ ಹಾರ್ನ್ ಬಿಲ್" ಎಂಬ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಆವಾಸಸ್ಥಾನ. ಸಿಲೋನ್ ಫ಼್ರಾಗ್ ಮೌಥ್, ಮರದರಿಶಿಣ, ಅಶೋಕ, ಉಪ್ಪಾಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಯುವಿಳಂಗ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿಶೇಷ ಸಸ್ಯ ಪ್ರಬೇಧಗಳು. ಸಹಸ್ರಲಿಂಗದಿಂದ ಗಣೇಶಪಾಲ್ ವರೆಗಿನ ೧೫.೭೬ ಕಿಮೀ ಉದ್ದ ಹರಿಯುವ ನದಿಯ ಎರಡೂ ಇಕ್ಕೆಲಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ೧೦೦ ಮಿ. ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು "ಶಾಲ್ಮಲಾ ನದಿ ಕಣಿವೆ ಸಂರಕ್ಷಣಾ ಪ್ರದೇಶ" ಅಥವಾ Shalmala River Riparian Ecosystem Conservation Reserve ಎಂದು ಘೋಷಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ https://maps.app.goo.gl/gqfZxWGpZBdie...
