Alexander Dovzhenko's 1930 film Earth (Zemlya) is the third of his Ukraine trilogy, following on from the singular Arsenal (1929). Earth is an extraordinary hymn to the land and nature and Dovzhenko crafts a strange beauty from what should be a simple propaganda film about collective farming. Earth marks the end of the great period of Soviet Montage cinema.
