What is the difference between a disfluency and a stutter?
Stuttering is characterized by core behaviors: repetition, prolongations, and blocks. Stuttering is treated with stuttering modification techniques. It may present with secondary features like tension, facial expressions, body movements, word or conversational avoidance, and interjections. Disfluency is characterized by solely these secondary features and is treated with fluency shaping techniques. The most important thing to remember for both of these is that they are often influenced by emotions. Anxious feelings or really intense feelings can change the way someone stutters, or the amount of disfluencies present in their running speech.
