Phnom Penh’s name comes from “Hill of Lady Penh.” According to legend, a wealthy woman named Daun Penh (Lady Penh) discovered four Buddha statues inside a floating tree along the banks of the Tonlé Sap River. She raised a hill (phnom) and built a temple (wat) atop it to house the statues. This became Wat Phnom, and the area was called Phnom Penh, or “Penh’s Hill.”
