Whew chile… this one gon’ ruffle some collars. In this video, we’re diving deep into the age-old debate: Which is better—hospital or hospice chaplaincy? And let me tell you, they are not the same.
As a Black woman in chaplain residency, who also facilitates grief groups and walks with families in hospice care, I’ve seen both sides. One will stretch your heart. The other will stretch your clinical skills.
If you’re discerning your next step in spiritual care—whether you're a seminary student, pastor thinking about pivoting, or a new CPE intern trying to figure out your lane—this video breaks down the real talk nobody wants to say out loud:
👉🏾 Hospital chaplaincy requires clinical training—ACT therapy, Motivational Interviewing, MBSR, charting, and trauma-informed presence.
👉🏾 Hospice chaplaincy leans on traditional pastoral care—rituals, funerals, long-term family relationships, and yes, grief support groups.
We talk requirements (hello, 4 units of CPE + board certification vs. 1 unit for hospice), the unspoken hierarchy in the field, and why chaplaincy is becoming more therapeutic than pastoral.
This ain’t shade—it’s clarity.
Because every calling needs alignment and preparation.
